Wind has a major effect on people’s comfort and their perception of and interaction with the surrounding environment. Particularly in modern cities, wind related issues include outdoor air quality, the concentration and dispersion of pollutants such as vehicle exhausts, the use of natural ventilation to enhance the energy efficiency and liveability of buildings, wind as a source of renewable energy, human comfort and pedestrian safety, and wind-induced noise.

The prevalence of SARS in 2003 highlighted many urban environmental issues that have their foundations in the planning stages of building developments and which continue through to the way in which we interact with our surrounding environment in our every day lives.
